Home / Bondurant Library / Restoration / Future Restoration and Improvements
Once the building is stabilized the Community has many options. There are many uses to which the building may be brought which will benefit the community:
Visitors Center, Local History Center, Community Meeting Hall: One forward-thinking neighbor suggested that a simple "OPEN" sign near the highway will signal when the building is open. Community residents are stepping up to volunteer: to welcome visitors, to share the area's history, and to check books out and in.
Library and Reading Room: Without losing any of its book-storage capabilities,
the front room may easily accommodate additional bookshelves. Shelves running
parallel to the front of the building will hold additional books and also allow
more natural light into the room than at present. This room may also contain a
small replica (non-functioning) wood stove, and period easy chair and lamp for
reading, and a fun kid's corner.
Books may include, for example: a permanent collection of the Library's original books, a rotating collection of current publications and best sellers donated by community members, and a featured collection of local authors.
History Room: The second room may be used for storing POPS materials and a computer to access archived materials. Display cabinets and shelves will protect our historical books and documents, including BCC archives. In the center of the room there is enough space for a table to accommodate small gatherings, to enable dessert-serving preparation during the BBQ, and to host a card game or two for the gentlemen in our community.
Kitchen: The back room may be brightened, and reconfigured for more efficiency and easier cleaning. Sketches show that there is adequate space for the two refrigerators PLUS additional shelving and longer counters. With an updated floor, this room will be adequate for a Children's Library and Sunday School room when it is not in use for strategic BBQ food preparation.
The Committee has explored a number of additional options. In future, should finances
permit, the Community may wish to consider these items:
In July 2009, the all-volunteer Library Restoration Committee was formed to coordinate the hoped-for salvage operation. The Committee's goals:
