The Process

Approvals and Support

Interior, front rooms As of November, 2009, the committee has received approval for the new foundation work from Greg Clark, District Ranger, representing the owner of the property: Bridger-Teton National Forest Big Piney District.

We have also communicated with Jamie Schoen, Forest Archeologist, who approved the project in principle. Jamie sent his "rehabilitation report" to the Wyoming State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) outlining the work we proposed to do to the library, including moving the building 10' away from the shed roof post for easier access. His recommendation to SHPO was that these improvements would not adversely affect this National Register property. We await the State's input.

The State of Wyoming, represented by the Wyoming State Historic Preservation Office, has given their approval of the project in general. We await their input on the specific issue of possibly moving the building 10' away from the shed roof post for easier access. The State has lent its support by awarding the project its annual HAAF Grant (see below).

The Episcopal Diocese of Wyoming, owner of both the Church and Library buildings, supports our community-wide endeavors in the person of our Deacon, Dennis Johnson.

Wyoming State HAAF Grant

We sought information to verify the level of work we may accomplish and still maintain or restore the historic integrity of the property, such as roofing materials, ramp, etc. To that end the project applied for and WAS AWARDED the Wyoming State Historic Preservation Office's HAAF Grant (PDF 839KB):

The Historic Architecture Assistance Fund (HAAF) will provide the services of architects and engineers to the owners of historic buildings to address issues involved with the rehabilitation and use of such properties. Typical projects that can be funded include a building assessment, structural analysis, analysis of building code and ADA requirements, and facade and signage schematic design.

The SHPO contracted with Kurt Dubbe, a qualified architect from Jackson, to perform the Library's assessment.

Funding

West facade Already fund raising is bringing results. See You Can Help for a summary.

The committee plans to spend the winter 2009-2010 pursuing funding options, including a letter campaign, grant applications, and local fund-raising events. Meanwhile, our deacon intends to apply for a matching grant from the Episcopal Church.

When the BCC reconvenes in spring we will work with the members to prioritize improvements as dictated by the community's wishes and available funding. If all goes well, we hope for construction to begin on the foundation after the Heritage Days event in mid-August 2010 (a period of low ground water and few scheduled activities).

Library Restoration Committee

In July 2009, the all-volunteer Library Restoration Committee was formed to coordinate the hoped-for salvage operation. The Committee's goals:
